Erdoğan sues main opposition leader for damages over Gülen group remarks

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has filed a lawsuit against the main opposition leader demanding damages for his remarks designating Erdoğan as the top figure in the political wing of the outlawed Gülen religious group, Cumhuriyet said on Thursday.

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on Tuesday accused the Turkish president of being the top figure of Gülen movement, which had been the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) ally until 2013 when corruption cases targeted senior AKP members.

Erdoğan is demanding $83,700 in damages from the CHP leader, Cumhuriyet said.

The two politicians have been tossing accusations back and forth since last month over the political wing of Gülen movement, that the government says carried out the 2016 coup attempt, as both accused each other of serving the outlawed movement.
