Turkey rebuffs COVID-19 test inaccuracy claims

Turkey's Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Wednesday that the accuracy rate of domestically produced COVID-19 testing kits is over 90 percent in response to claims on social media alleging that the rate was far lower, state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

"There is an interesting discussion on social media. It is claimed that the accuracy of our test kits is 40 percent. The accuracy of our test kits is over 90 percent," Koca said in a press conference.

He said Turkey may develop a vaccine for the novel coronavirus in the first quarter of the next year.

Erkan Aydın, a main opposition Republican People's Democratic Party lawmaker, said on July 23 that Turkish authorities sent the domestic COVID-19 test kit to Europe to test its quality concerning international standards.

He said Turkey's kits failed to identify 60 percent of COVID-19 cases.
