Turkey to receive second batch of COVID-19 vaccines by weekend - Erdoğan

Ten million doses of the Chinese-made Sinovac COVID-19 vaccines are expected to arrive in Turkey by the weekend, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told reporters on Friday.

The first batch of 3 million doses had arrived on Dec. 30, and the vaccination effort has reached more than one million people in Turkey since Jan. 14.

As the campaign progresses, the government will discuss whether to reopen restaurants in the next cabinet meeting, Erdoğan said following Friday prayers in Istanbul. The president also said an easing of restrictions could undermine the progress made against the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of the measures taken to slow down successive waves of the coronavirus’s spread, Ankara has been imposing curfews since last month.

According to figures released by the Health Ministry, Turkey’s COVID-19 death toll rose to 24,640 as of Thursday.
