Turkey’s Supreme Court elects new head

Turkey’s Supreme Court elected Mehmet Akarca, formerly the country’s chief prosecutor, as its new head on Tuesday, news site T24 reported. 

Akarca received 267 out of 332 votes cast by the judges of the court in Ankara. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan appointed Akarca chief prosecutor in 2015 and renewed his appointment in 2019.

Akarca is the brother-in-law of businessman Ethem Sancak, a close ally of the president.
